Now that B2TR has been released, the first issues are cropping up. You should read this BEFORE installing B2TR.
Everyone
- Microsoft is recommending that everyone delete the “Building Blocks.dotx” file in order to have the most up-to-date content in galleries. To do so, use Start, Run, type “%appdata%\Microsoft\Document Building Blocks” and delete the file “Building Blocks.dotx” there. Word will recreate the file automatically once you open it again and drop-down a gallery. Note that you shouldn’t delete the file, if you moved the Building Blocks (galleries e.g.) content.
- The RSS support of Outlook has been significantly improved in B2TR. Due to that, Microsoft is recommending to follow the steps outlined in this MS blog post.
File Not Found / File Not Available
- When you try to open files in Access, PPT, Word or Excel B2TR, you receive the message “File not Found”. Or, your files just won’t open.
Solution (from the known issues page): Office has an anti-virus API which we call every time we load a file. In 2007 Microsoft Office a change was made to support scanning encrypted macros. In making this change, we inadvertently changed the size of a data structure in the conversation, and Symantec’s Norton scanner returns an error saying this was unexpected. We treat ANY error from the scanner as a critical failure and block opening files. Unfortunately we do that in ALL cases where the scanner is called. In short with 2007 Office Beta 2 Technical Refresh and Norton Antivirus (any version) the user cannot open any files in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, Access and Project. The user receives an error of File failed to open, File not found, etc.
We currently only see this with the Symantec’s Consumer Norton AV product. Most corporate deployments do not use this plug-in. We are also checking other scanners to see if they are affected. In the Norton case the best option is to disable the Office plug-in. See Method 2: in this KB for guidance on how to do that. - When you try to open files in Excel B2TR, you receive the message “File not Found”.
Solution: In Excel, this could be due to the following checkbox being checked: Excel Options, Advanced, General section, Ignore other applications that use Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE).
File Format Issues / Corrupted Files
- It is good practice to save all files created in the new file formats (docx, xlsx, pptx, etc) in the 97-2003 file formats (doc, xls, ppt, etc) before installing B2TR. If there any issues with your files in B2TR, you are then able to resort to the versions in the older file formats.
- Files created in B1 and B1TR will NOT open in B2TR. You need to save them under a different file name in B2.
- Word files saved in Beta 2 in the new XML file format (dotx, dotm, etc) should open in Word B2TR. If you are having issues with a file, please email it to me right away. As a precaution though, you should save all your Word files in the 97-2003 document formats (doc, dot) in Beta 2 before installing B2TR. This will guarantee that you can still open them in B2TR.
- Files created in Excel 2007 Beta 2 in the new XML file formats should open in Excel B2TR without any problems. If you experience any problems with these files, please email them to me right away.
- Files created in PowerPoint Beta 2 in the new XML file formats should open in PowerPoint B2TR. If you experience any problems with these files, please email them to me right away.
The only exception is: Custom Colors and Custom Fonts saved as a theme (*.thmx) or presentation (*.pptx) from Beta2 do not show up in Theme Colors or Theme Fonts galleries when opened/applied in Beta 2 Technical Refresh (B2TR). - When you open Word or Outlook, it complains about “Normal.dotm” or “NormalEmail.dotm” being corrupt or being in the wrong format.
Solution: The issue should disappear when you open Outlook/Word again. If that isn’t the case, type “%appdata%\Microsoft\Templates” into Start, Run (this is the location for Windows XP), and rename the two files there to something else. This will force Outlook/Word to recreate them from scratch in the correct format. - When you open Word and when you try to insert an item from a gallery, you get a message that “Building Blocks.dotx” is corrupted.
Solution: Start, Run, type “%appdata%\Microsoft\Document Building Blocks” and delete the file “Building Blocks.dotx” there. Word will recreate the file correctly when you open it again. - When you open a new XML file format Word document (dotx, dotm, etc) in Word 2007 B2TR, you receive a message that the file is corrupted.
Solution: The file you tried to open was most likely created in B1 or B1TR. B2TR cannot read files created in B1 or B1TR. You should open the file in B2 and save it using Save As under a new filename. As an additional precaution, you should also save it in the 97-2003 document formats (doc, dot).
Installation of B2TR
- There is a minimum requirement for 2.0 GB of free space on the Windows
partition in order to install the client patch. This is a hard requirement
that is needed because of the large size of the client patch (nearly 500
mb), and the way that Windows Installer patching works. Some of this space
will be returned after installation, but no more than 500 mb can be expected
to be returned after installation. If you do not have enough disk space on
this partition, you should take steps to increase the amount of free space. - If you have tampered with the \MSOCache folder or it is damaged in some
way, you will be prompted for the source files. Do not move or delete this
folder. - The B2TR patch cannot be uninstalled. The only way to revert your installation back to Beta 2 is to remove Office 2007 completely and the reinstall Beta 2.
- Once you have installed the B2TR patch, you cannot install any Office 2007 Beta 2 programs anymore.
- If you downloaded the German language pack for Beta 2 English, then you have to download the full German B2TR patch as well. Otherwise, the German spell checker will crash in Outlook and Word. In addition, you need to get the German B2TR SLP patch as well. The SLP specific patch does not include the German spell checker which is contained in the full German B2TR patch. If you want to, you can also extract proof-de-de.msp from the full German B2TR patch and install it and the German SLP patch only.
- See this KB article for troubleshooting B2TR installation issues.
- B2TR and all B2TR downloads (e.g. PDF add-in) are compatible with Vista RC1. If you want do a clean install of Vista RC1 with Office 2007, then install RC1 first, followed by Office 2007 Beta 2 and then B2TR. If you have a current installation of Vista Beta 2 with Office 2007 Beta 2, then install B2TR first followed by the update to Vista RC1.
- Do not install B2TR on Vista Beta 2, if you are not planning to immediately upgrade to Vista RC1. B2TR is designed for Vista RC1 and you will probably not be able to use Office 2007 B2TR under Vista B2.
- If you find yourself unable to remove Office 2007 B2TR or to reinstall Office 2007 Beta 2 after removing it, please contact me via email.
- If you have OneNote 2007 installed, please read my OneNote B2TR post as well.
Instant Search, BCM, PDF, XPS, Add-Ins, Expression Web, Links in Outlook, Misc
- Instant search for Outlook and OneNote is not available in Vista Beta 2.
Solution: You need to upgrade to Vista RC1. - All add-ins written for Office 2007 don’t work anymore, and/or give error messages.
Solution: Disable those add-ins for now and wait for updates from the developers. Microsoft changed a lot. The new control ID list is now available for download (posted by Jensen Harris and linked from his blog). You can now also get the new customUI.xsd. - BCM Beta 2 is not compatible with Outlook 2007 B2TR.
Solution: Download BCM B2TR - After installing B2TR, files cannot be saved in PDF or XPS format.
Solution: Due to a legal disagreement with Adobe, Microsoft is providing XPS and PDF functionality only as downloadable add-ins (PDF, XPS, PDF and XPS). - Windows Desktop Search 3 Beta 1 is not compatible with Outlook and OneNote B2TR.
Solution: Install Windows Desktop Search 3 Beta 2. - Expression Web Beta 1 can be installed after the B2TR patch has been applied.
- In Outlook 2007 B2TR running under Vista RC1, you receive the error message “This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator” when you click a link in Outlook.
Solution: FireFox seems to be responsible for this. Check this blog post for steps on how to resolve the error. - Word 2007 crashes moments after opening under Vista RC1. Your default printer is a Dell 5100CN network printer.
Solution: Make a different printer your default printer. - If you have a completely corrupted Ribbon after installing B2TR, remove all Office 2007 applications and reinstall them again as Beta 2 followed by B2TR.
- You cannot use Word 2007 as Outlook 2003’s email editor. Outlook 2003 was not designed to work with Word 2007. This is not a bug. This is by design.

I have been deleting this Building Blocks.dotx from the wrong folder all the time.
After I deleted them from “C:\Users\Myname\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Document Building Blocks\1033″ Word does no longer mention the “Building Blocks”file BUT still stops working…

I’m seeing a couple pixel white border along the bottom and right sides when viewing powerpoint presentations (in the 2003 file format if it makes any difference). Is there any known workaround for this?

Thankfully, the information you provided fixed the problem, and now i can add headers and footers to my documents. Thanks for this information, without it, i would have been lost as to what was going wrong.

Excellent post. I also had the building blocks problem and tried to deinstall Office 2007 and reinstall it again.
Unfortunately I was not able to install Beta2 again and so I hat do get back to a system restore point.
After deleting building blocks (as you mentioned) everything worked fine again.
Another issue is that modified bibliography stylesheets that worked with Beta2 are not compatible with Beta2TR (they are not even loaded). I think this is caused by changing field naming on certain fields by Microsoft.

I have an issue regarding Word changes in the b2tr.
I can not change text direction in text boxes anymore. I just tried it in beta2 and it works seemlessly. But in b2tr, the button is disabled no matter what. So is the button to rotate the text box which worked fine in beta2. I have tried it in 3 different machines with the b2tr and a laptop with beta2 which I have not updated.
I dont know if this is the right place to ask, but could anybody help me in this regard? Is anyone else experiencing the same issue?

I could not installed the B2TR.
Everytime I run the update, it didn’t show any menu, it’s just idle (only the first 5 seconds, there’s HDD activities).
I already checked task manager to see whether B2TR was running, it was for about less than 10 seconds and then dissapear from the task manager.
I already cleaned up the temp folder, and have 2.3GB Free space.
Anyone can help?

@Voltus5: the same thing occured to me, you have to wait for it to load (I waited for 2 minutes for the installation window to appear). It is, after all a freakin’ LARGE file, so it will require some patience to load.

Trend Micro Anti-Spam Pilot, one of the best spam solution that I have tested is not working any more. TEO, an add-in for Tablet PC/UMPC users is not working any more.

TEO seems to be a 2007-specific add-in. As noted above, all of those were broken with B2TR and developers will need to update them. This can take some time, e.g. I haven’t updated mine yet.
I don’t know what’s going on with Trend Micro Anti-Spam Pilot, but you should contact Trend Micro and ask for help.

Hi, Patrick — This is not intended as criticism, so please accept it with a smile, as that is how it is meant.
It’s a mini grammar lesson. It’s true that people are terribly abusing their “me” and “I” pronouns these days, but I am afraid you have over-compensated.
In your title, “Patrick Schmid: Putting You & I back into Office 2007’s UI - B2TR Issues”, the correct use would be, “Putting You & Me back . . . .”
Why? Because “I” is the subjective, “in-charge” pronoun, and “me” is the objective receiver of the action. You and I go to the market, but you give me your good advice. In your title, Patrick Schmid is the active force who is telling it as it is to two passive receivers, who must be you and me; not you and I. (”You” gives no hint, as it has just the one form.)
So: You and I confer with Patrick. Patrick tells you and me what to do. If I were you, I would listen to Patrick. Patrick will never fail me. I have always taken Patrick’s advice. I see that Patrick has given me more information. —All of those examples are correct. “I” is subjective, in-charge, the doer of the action. “Me” is objective, the receiver of the action. The really common, really bad form you hear on the street, especially among kids, is “Me and Patrick went to the movies”, and that is BAD!! (Should be, “Patrick and I went to the movies.”)
I just thought you might be interested. After all, the rest of what I read here is 100% your expertise, and I am far, far behind . . . .

There is a little problem when installing Word 2007 parallel to Outlook 2003.
When writing an E-Mail Outlook complains that it is not able to find Word 2003 and so you have to use the Outlook 2003 text editor (no spelling-checker, …).
Everything was fine with Beta 2, this problem came up with Beta 2 TR.
Do you know any solution?

I’m having problems with B2TR on my PC, and I’ve trawled the ‘net far and wide, to no avail - I can’t find any solution and/or even discussion of my problem, so I hope someone here knows what happened.
I’m using the french version, and after the TR installation, all programs have become completely unusable: the entire UI is corrupt, in Word, Powerpoint, Publisher and Excel. The menus don’t work at all, although the ribbon in Word looks normal, although only on the first tab - the other tabs simply don’t exist.
Outlook simply won’t start, citing lack of resources. Powerpoint actually tells me something is corrupt, and to close all files and restart Powerpoint.
In Publisher, functionality seems correct, until you look at the menus: ‘File’ has ben replaced by ‘Unread element’, and in that menu, you have various unrelated options (like ‘view calendar’ and that sort of things) as well as oriental characters (to my untrained eye, they look like Traditional Chinese, but I could be wrong).

I checked with Microsoft on your issue. Outlook 2003 is not designed to work with Word 2007. You were lucky it worked in Beta 2, but this won’t work by design.

Office 2007 Beta 2 includes several different programs that come in various installer packages:
- Professional Plus has Access, Excel, InfoPath, Outlook, PPT, Publisher, Word
- Groove
- SharePoint Designer
- OneNote
- Project Professional
- Visio Professional
So if you just installed Professional Plus Beta 2 and then patched it to B2TR, you cannot install Groove, SPD, OneNote, Project or Visio 2007 anymore as they would have to be installed as Beta 2 and then as well patched to B2TR. However, once B2TR is installed, no Beta 2 program will install anymore.
There won’t be any next beta anymore according to various news reports. According to those, the next Office 2007 build will be the release one.

Why in the world is the Office install writing to the Windows partition, and requring 2 GB free there? The Office install should write to the Office partition and the Temp partition, and leave its permanent installed files in the Office partition.
Unless Office, like Internet Explorer, is now part of Windows? ? ?

the Office B2 install is copying its MSI files into \MSOCache, which should be on the same partition as the Office program files. You should not mess with this folder, as messing with it will give you grave problems when installing patches/updates. The B2TR patch however does not modify the contents of the \MSOCache folder. This particular folder is something specific to Office and has been around in 2003 already (where you could delete it. MS got rid of that option in 2007, as deleting MSOCache created an enormous amount of issues with 2003).
In addition to that, Windows Installer itself puts files in some places. B2 goes into \windows\installer\$PatchCache$\Managed
B2TR goes into \windows\installer (the 6 .MSP files with an 8/26/06 date). Those files are written there by Windows Installer and programs that use Windows Installer end up having files written to windows\installer.
So no, Office is definitely not part of Windows. To the contrary, Microsoft has stripped out of Office 2007 features that should be operating system features, such as speech recognition. Those are now part of Windows (Vista). MS has gone to great lengths to make sure Office is just Office and doesn’t play at all in the domain of the OS. The installer issue affects Windows programs in general and Office is nothing special in this regard.

I am confused on an install. i have a copy of the opplus-en and have installed it. it does not give me the option to install project of visio. Everywhere i read it says they are included but i cannot find them in that file. Is there somewhere else i should look? Am i missing something?

I have tried several unistall/install cycles - and I’m getting pretty good at it and the Beta 2 looks really good … untill I install B2TR.
I’m installing B2 on my D-drive, while Windows XP (DK-version) resides on my C-drive.

You have excellent tips. I’d like to ask for help.
I installed the B2TR on top of my Beta install (with Business Contact Manager). I then installed the new version of BCM.
When I start Outlook, each time!, it recognizes that BCM is installed, but it puts me through the “Choose your database” screen, then into the Wizard Help screen. When I click Finish, it crashes and says there has been a critical error.
Any ideas?

After 2 more uninstallation (Add/Remove Programs+WinInstallCleanUp)-install (antivirus scan off; WinInstall log: voicewarmup) cycles everything works just fine.

Hi Patrick,
I was able to install all B2TR components successfully. Afterwards I also did the SharePoint Reconfiguration successfully. However, when I try to open Central Administration page it says that “An unexpected Error Occured.”
Please help me in resolving this issue.

Anyone else had issues with Themes not fully applying to OneNote (actually no interface within ON or OL to change theme… have to go into Word to change). ON then applies theme to title bar, but not menu bar and panes….

Hi all,
I installed Office 2007, and then installed B2TR. All the core software is working fine now.
But, I also bought (for a whole $1.50!) Outlook ‘07 BCM. I downloaded and went through the whole install process, including the reg key and EULA window, but before it installed completely I got this:
Wizard .exe
The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000135). Click on OK to terminate the application.
I’ve since read here that I can’t install a pre-B2TR program, like Outlook ‘07 B2, after I’ve installed Office B2TR. (Which sucks, because I also bought Project and Visio, and hadn’t installed them yet. I’ve only tried Project so far, but it won’t install either.)
Anyway, at this moment I’m downloading Outlook ‘07 BCM B2TR (BCMBeta2TR.exe) Before I click ‘run,’ will it install when I already have Outlook B2TR installed?
By the way, thank you for your good work here, Patrick. I’m fortunate to have found your virtual presence.

Ok, so I updated my Beta 2 to the technical refresh. Now, I cannot read or recover my .docx files that I incidentally saved instead of their .doc counterparts. Is there any way to get these documents opened in Word TR without going through the process of removing TR and re-installing Beta 2? I’ve tried the “Open and Repair” function, but that didn’t work…

Downloaded the B2TR and every thing works fine fortunately, however I did get the building blocks thing a couple of times and that went away. What I am really concerned about is that I lost the fancy headers and footers and most of the decorative coverpages is there any way to get these back. I really miss using them to impress fellow students and professors when writing reports.

Delete the Building Blocks fie as described above. Then open up any of those galleries. Word should restore the file automatically.

I have an issue with Access 2007, created a simple program that captures data, and filters this data into a report, this program runs perfectly in 2003 but when i run it in 2007 the filters in the code don’t function, any idea how to solve this?

Patrick (or anyone who might have encountered this problem) I had BR2 and was having issues with Outlook with Business Contact where the SQL database wouldn’t start. (the services themselves were somehow disabled. I downloaded the B2TR flavours of Office and Outlook with BCM, patched office just fine, but the BCM failed to load. The warning dialog tells me that I am missing setup files. After reading through this site, I dug through my HD and foudn that the /msoffice files are all in place and everything seems to be where it should be.
I have tried to dig through the MS site to no avail on this issue and can’t seem to find anyone else that this issue prehaps you can help or give me a clue as to where to search?

I don’t know BCM at all, so I suggest you check out the public newsgroups for Outlook. You can get to them with the link all the way on the top of this page.

Ever since i have tried to install the B2TR I cant run the Office Programs anymore. Every time I try to open for example Word I get the information:
„Word konnte zuletzt nicht korrekt gestartet warden. Das Starten von Word im abesichterm Modus hilff Ihnen, ein Startprolem zu korrigieren oder zu isolieren, sodass Sie das Programm erfolgreich starten können. Einige Funktionen können in diesem Modus deaktiviert sein.“
When i then klick on „yes“ it seem fist to start up normaly but then I get into the Window installer window and it starts to install some stuff. After installation it somehow still does not work. Any idea what it could be?

Hello, I updated to B2TR from B2 and now have issues with Outlook. Everytime I click on Send/Receive, I get the following error message: ‘Not implemented’
My details are:
Windows XP Pro SP2
Office 97, 2000, xp, 2003, 2007 B2TR
Outlook 2007 correctly replaced my 2003 version.

Thanks, that was a good start as I found I had both Outlook 2003 & 2007 installed. So, after uninstalling Outlook 2003, and tinkering with this a little more, I found that instead of Uninstalling or Repairing Office 2007 (which can take a loooooong time), just going to Add/Remove Programs—>Office 2007—>Change—>Add/Remove, and fixing all the Outlook issues there did the trick. Hope this helps others.

I have a problem with the page numbering on the BT2r of Word. I deleted all Building Block files. I restarted Word, and the page numbering function still doesn’t work. I even checked to see if any functions were disabled, and they aren’t. Is there any workaround? Thanks,

if you deleted both copies of Building Blocks on your computer, then run a repair of Office (Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, Change Office 2007, Repair)

Thank you. After showing invisible files, I made sure to delete the temporary files of Building Blocks. Afterwards, I ran the repair of Office, and voila–The pagination now works!

Hi Patrick,
I have installed Office Beta 2 and then B2TR. I can’t open the programs of files. Windows acts like it is setting up every time I open Word, then it says to check with setup.chm.
I think starting again is in order, but how do I remove the first beta 2 without corrupting the rest?

I’d deactivate the Office plugin of Norton AntiVirus first. Then I’d remove all of the beta and install the trial version from http://trymicrosoftoffice.com.

I’m having difficulties in printing a workbook .xlsm to pdf printer from a vba code, it result a blank page. I use pdfcreator, PrimoPdf, and adobe. all results blank page that curious me a lot. If you don’t mind, i could send you the .xlsm, since i’m frustating finding the answer.
if i run it from excel 2003, it worked 100%. nothing wrong if print from others application, such as notepad, wordpad. it’s just problem in excel 2007 beta 2.
well, my environtmen are: WinXp sp2, Excel 2007 beta 2. (and zone alarm pro is running in desktop.).

you should remove Beta 2 and install a trial version from http://trymicrosoftoffice.com. Beta 2 is so old and buggy, there is no point in even trying to troubleshoot this.

Since removing Office 2007 beta 2, in Word when I try to use the thesaurus I get an Office Setup dialog. When it finishes there are no synonymns for a simple word such a “nice”. Messages to two Word newsgroups went unanswered. Makes me want to go back to WordPerfect!

you might have to remove Office 2007 using the manual removal steps and then reinstall it.
